I found myself with a wee bit of free time between freelance jobs, and somehow this crazy fanimation that I started almost 3 years ago managed to worm its way back into my consciousness. Suddenly a whole scene had been completed! It seems as though Poo really wanted his animation to be finished...

Take that, Kraken!

The completion of the Summers segment brings the amount of finished animation up to about the 1:36 mark, which is more or less exactly halfway. In the screenshot above you can see a bit of my work process in Flash; I would kill to be able to re-compose everything in After Effects, but that would probably set me back another three years, so I'm going to concentrate on what I've started.

As for the Kickstarter idea, it's still a possibility, but I have upcoming work in the fall and I couldn't set that aside even if PK Flash was being crowd-funded. However, the fact that so many people were supportive of the idea was encouraging, so I'm going to try my best to soldier on for now. At this rate, perhaps I'll be able to post the final video in time for Earthbound's 20th anniversary!
What a waste of time, you might say. Not so! I still receive every bit of feedback posted to this blog and my Youtube account, and every time it happens I feel a little pang of guilt that I'm not working on the video. But guilt is not the best state of mind in which to work, and I had my reasons for putting it aside. That being said, a large part of the reason the video is taking so long
is because I had to give priority to projects that pay the rent (same old story!). Being
a labour of love, PK Flash invariably took a backseat to my freelance
work. Now that the dust has settled and my animation skills have greatly improved, I thought it might be worth revisiting a few of my shelved projects. PK Flash being one of them.

Intriguingly, someone in the comments suggested I start a Kickstart/Indiegogo campaign and just get 'er done. As leery as I am about asking strangers for money for something so frivolous, it might be an idea worth entertaining. If the video was funded by fans, the video could be done in as little time as 4 months or less (with the additional bonus of some shiny new After Effects wizardry). I may put a poll up on this blog and see what the response is. In the meantime, I'll keep chipping away at my usual glacier pace...
I actually have been slowly picking away at this thing in earnest, but now is the time to resume full-speed. Here's a a few still shots of the things I've finished animating:
I don't want to spoil too much as I go along, but suffice to say these elements are now all fully animated. You might be able to pick them out from the rough sketches in the animation test I posted last year; the Runaway Dog, for example, has only two frames of movement. Orange Kid, Liar X. Agerate and Everdred have substantially more action involved.

Also, someone mentioned to me the absence of Saturn Valley in the animation test; never fear! Although PK Flash depicts events from the game in rough chronological order and features as many characters as possible, I took many liberties and so some elements may not show up in exactly the way you remember them from the game. Think of it as how an animated TV show would go about adapting the game. Also, the test is only about a quarter of the way through the story- Still a long way to go!PKFlashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01750560340289327340noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285333779982357648.post-37100021128891641472010-10-02T18:29:00.001-07:002010-10-02T18:33:57.924-07:00HiatusProject PK Flash! is going on hiatus while I finish my last year of school. This is more of a personal note to myself so I don't forget, but I have a good feeling I'll return to finish it. Ha ha ha... I hope I didn't jinx myself there.

In the meantime, you can check out my newest endeavor, Planet REDWOOD. It's a fansite dedicated to my other favorite cult classic video game, Deadly Premonition. This is basically what the final colouring style will look like, but with cleaner lines; these are just rough blobs of tone I threw together for reference. Also I decided to go with the completely filled in dot eyes, rather than the more cartoony eyes shown above in which you can see the whites. It was easier, and seemed to fit better, although it does give the designs more of a unique feel. The overall look I'm going for has a bit of a pastel, children's book quality to it, lots of flat layers to give the impression of depth. I'll put up some examples later.

ALSO: Happy Canada Boing!PKFlashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01750560340289327340noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285333779982357648.post-522670837329783072010-06-28T06:06:00.000-07:002010-06-28T06:13:20.757-07:00Ness rough walk cycle
Rough animation for Ness's walk cycle, as seen in the title image of this blog. An Animated Earthbound Tribute. A couple months ago, I decided to try out my new-found Flash skills by making a music video for Catherine Warwick's rendition of Pollyanna. I have decided to create a production blog, documenting my progress. The entire 3:43 minutes of the song have been fully storyboarded and timed out, so all that needs to be done is the background colouring and actual animation (a walk in the park, right?).

The following images are screenshots from the opening scene, depicting the meteor crash. As you can see in the third image and the title of this blog, I'm roughing out the animation over the clean BGs and will colour them in later. I plan to post some rough-to-clean boards to show my process. If I can swing it, I'll put up some Youtube links showing the actual rough animation before I cover it all with paint. PK Flash spans the entire game story, with some necessary edits for length; as of this writing, I'm halfway through Ness and Paula's misadventures in Threed. Expect some zombie-related updates at some point.

In short, I hope you all enjoy watching me struggle to use basic tweening techniques.

Here comes the Buzz, doo-doo-doo-doo...

There's maybe like three types of stars in this scene, copied over and over.

The animation for this is actually kind of cool, but unfortunately this is a still image.

Any comments and stuff are welcome.
